"Joe" Mason, a member of the Penn State baseball team. The idea came about during a baseball game against Princeton when Mason and his teammates were shown a statue of Princeton's Bengal tiger. In response, Mason said, "Well, up at Penn State we have Mount Nittany right on our campus, where rules the Nittany Mountain Lion, who has never been beaten in a fair fight. So, Princeton Tiger, look out!" . Mason later wrote that the mountain lion should be the school's mascot. The name "Nittany" comes from Mount Nittany, which is part of the Appalachian Mountain range.
